China’s Environmental Law Amendment 2014: Impacts and Implications – A New White Paper From EcoVadis

April 3, 2015 EcoVadis

China is home to some 30% of the companies who are assessed by EcoVadis. If your company or supply chain has a presence in China, then you are likely aware that environmental issues are a top concern. You may also have seen the recent documentary Under The Dome – Investigating China’s Smog by Chai Jing, which has brought back into the spotlight the problems of pollution and environmental degradation in China.

Here at EcoVadis’ our analyst team (Chinese-speaking team members in particular) of course also take great interest in the status and progress of issues such as pollution and environmental laws and other activities that seek to improve the environmental outlook in China.

A year ago last month (24 April 2014) China’s legislature adopted an amendment to the China Environmental Protection Law (which was originally enacted in 1989). This new law was put into effect on January 1, 2015, with some significant features such as compounding fees, increase in potential lawsuits, and incentives for public officials to enforce. Four EcoVadis analysts have taken the initiative to examine this amended law and produce a white paper reviewing:

  • What it is China’s Environmental Protection Law 2014 Amendment all about?
  • What challenges does it still face?
  • How effective is the law, and what impacts might it have in the near future?
