How to Measure Sustainability in the Juice Value Chain

January 10, 2020 EcoVadis

“Environmental and social aspects have always played an important role for Eckes-Granini, as a family-owned enterprise. In recognition of the growing social significance of sustainability and its commitment to responsible action, Eckes-Granini developed a Group-wide sustainability strategy in 2013 and embedded it in their Corporate Strategy Agenda 2020.” The strategy includes ambitious targets designed to improve sustainability within the supply chain and manufacturing and to strengthen Eckes-Granini’s position as the leading supplier of fruit juices and beverages in Europe.

Main Targets:

  • Full legal and regulatory compliance
  • Authentic, high-quality raw materials and fair competition in the supply chain
  • 100% Ecovadis sustainability assessment for suppliers
  • 100% sustainable juice

Eckes-Granini has set high standards for sustainability – not only for the organization and its employees, but for its suppliers and other business partners as well. To achieve these targets, Eckes-Granini is using several platforms and tools and is collaborating with EcoVadis to assess its own CSR performance as well as its suppliers’ driving sustainability across the whole value chain. Clear, measurable targets have been set for suppliers and processors, focusing on continuous improvement. This also requires cooperation with the suppliers in the process of ensuring sustainable development and increasing engagement.

Entirely Sustainable in All Areas

Eckes-Granini has assessed 196 suppliers and processors, of which 137 achieved an EcoVadis score above 45/100 (70 percent) and 59 achieved between 30 – 45/100 (30 percent). These 59  are ambitiously working on corrective action plans and measures to improve. The Eckes-Granini Group earned an outstanding rating in the last audit and now ranks among the top 5 percent of audited enterprises.

Eckes-Granini supports the industry-wide sustainability initiatives of the European Fruit Juice Association (AIJN). The company also joined the Sustainable Juice Covenant, a global initiative coordinated by the Sustainable Trade Initiative IDH, in February 2019. As members, Eckes-Granini and other international firms are dedicated to the goal of continuously increasing the relative share of sustainable juices and smoothies to 100 percent by the year 2030.
