Shiseido EMEA Joins Responsible Beauty Initiative

July 22, 2021 EcoVadis EN

Shiseido EMEA accelerates its social and environmental supply chain performance in conjunction with the Group’s regional sustainability roadmap.

Shiseido EMEA announces it has joined Responsible Beauty Initiative (RBI). Through this membership, Shiseido aims to share and strengthen responsible practices within the cosmetics industry by helping to reduce environmental footprints and social impacts across supply chains by promoting a common understanding in a continuous improvement process.

Launched in 2017, RBI is a sector initiative focused on sustainable procurement which unites beauty industry leaders including Clarins, Coty, Groupe Rocher, L’Oréal and LVMH. RBI is coordinated by EcoVadis, the world’s most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings.

RBI relies on EcoVadis to serve as a common basis for measuring and evaluating supplier performance and their commitment to social and environmental responsibility. Deployed since 2019 at Shiseido EMEA*, the platform enables the company to currently assess 80% of its strategic suppliers, with the goal to assess 100% by 2022. This approach encourages the implementation of ethical, social and environmental practices that are aligned with Shiseido’s values in terms of sustainability.

Franck Marilly, President & CEO, Shiseido EMEA & Global Fragrance, comments: “Sustainable development is at the heart of Shiseido’s mission: “Beauty Innovations for a Better World.” By joining RBI, we are contributing to a virtuous circle in favor of a more responsible supply chain through our joint efforts with other members of the cosmetics industry. At the dawn of our 150th Anniversary, we continue to make strides toward a better future for our company and the environment.

RBI is dedicated to a global beauty industry where all suppliers are committed to the continuous improvement of their ethical, social, environmental and business practices. Understanding that responsibility is distributed throughout the value chain from small producer to end-consumer, including all manufacturers and intermediaries, RBI is committed to supporting suppliers rated by the EcoVadis platform on their journey to sustainability.

David McClintock, Marketing Director EcoVadis, adds: “Sustainability risks in the cosmetics industry are intensifying globally – from raw materials to the use and disposal of packages. This is putting increased pressure on procurement and supply chain managers to manage sustainability risks so they can protect their brands and create new value for their organizations. By joining RBI, Shiseido EMEA is contributing to a collaboration that will accelerate and strengthen the ethical, social and environmental performance of not only its own suppliers, but also across the broader beauty industry supply chain.

The RBI initiative now counts 8 members, including Shiseido EMEA, who work together to address the unique challenges of the beauty industry’s global supply chain with the desire to increase transparency within their panel of suppliers and take advantage of synergies. By being one of the first companies to join, Shiseido EMEA is making good on its commitment and strong ambitions to carry out its sustainable strategy.
