According to Eurostat, the data passengers and kilometres registered inside the EU in 2019 remain relatively the same (82.8 per cent), dropping by only one per cent since 2017. Countries that stand out the most for using car transport are Norway (89.1 per cent), Iceland (88.8 per cent) and Lithuania (90.6 per cent), while countries with lower rates are Czechia and Slovakia with 73.8 per cent and Hungary scoring 71.6 percentage points for the use of car transport within the EU, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
However, the silver lining in such data is that the number of newly registered passenger cars with zero-emission has increased drastically in the last five years, as from 1.9 per cent in 2019, it jumped to 5.3 per cent in 2020, showing an evident surge.
In addition, countries with the most zero-emission vehicles in 2020 were Norway (51.6 per cent), Iceland (26.2 per cent) and the Netherlands (20.2 per cent), while Cyprus (0.4 per cent), Poland and Greece have the lowest rates (0.8 per cent).
