In the latest episode of the Sustainable Value Chains Podcast, Fergal Byrne speaks with Bettina Grabmayr, the Methodology and Research Director at EcoVadis, about the importance of sustainability ratings, supplier engagement, and the evolving landscape of sustainability data. EcoVadis, a global leader in sustainability ratings, plays a critical role in helping companies manage sustainability risks, improve performance, and navigate complex regulations.
The Role of EcoVadis in Driving Sustainable Supply Chains
EcoVadis sustainability ratings are integral for companies aiming to manage environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks across their global supply chains. Bettina highlights that, with supply chains growing more complex, reliable sustainability data is hard to access but crucial. EcoVadis bridges this gap by providing ratings that help companies better understand their suppliers’ performance and identify areas for improvement.
A unique strength of EcoVadis is its ability to engage suppliers beyond the surface level. By offering actionable insights and improvement tools, EcoVadis ensures that suppliers not only participate in the rating process but also benefit from it. This approach fosters deeper engagement and leads to better data quality, which is vital for managing sustainability risks.
Overcoming Challenges in Sustainability Data Collection
According to Bettina, incomplete or inaccurate data is a common issue in sustainability assessments, especially when dealing with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). EcoVadis’ database, built over 17 years and covering 143,000 companies across 180 countries, is unique in its extensive coverage of SMEs. This gives EcoVadis a more comprehensive view of global supply chains compared to other data providers, which often focus on publicly listed companies.
To ensure data accuracy, EcoVadis employs a dual-analyst review process for each rating. By leveraging both human expertise and technology, such as machine learning, they verify company-reported data rigorously. This approach allows them to offer trustworthy insights, helping companies make informed procurement and investment decisions.
A Holistic and Tailored Approach to Sustainability Assessments
EcoVadis assessment methodology is centered around four key sustainability pillars: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Each of these pillars is further divided into 21 sustainability issues. Bettina explains that assessments are tailored to a company’s size, industry, and geographic location to focus on what is most material. This customization ensures the ratings are both relevant and actionable, allowing companies to address their most significant risks and opportunities.
The materiality-based approach aligns with emerging regulations like the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), helping companies comply with stringent sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements. EcoVadis ratings also provide a comprehensive view by incorporating external stakeholder input, ensuring that companies’ sustainability claims are backed by reliable evidence.
Supporting Continuous Improvement
EcoVadis doesn’t stop at providing ratings. They support rated companies – especially SMEs – on their sustainability journey by offering tools like corrective action plans and e-learning resources through the EcoVadis Academy. This improvement-focused approach enables companies to close gaps in their sustainability performance and enhance their ratings over time. Bettina notes that this journey is about more than meeting compliance; it’s about making real, positive impacts on people and the planet.
The Future of Sustainability Ratings and Technology
Looking ahead, Bettina sees technology, particularly AI, playing a larger role in scaling sustainability assessments and processing large volumes of data. However, she emphasizes that AI is not a catch-all solution – human expertise will always be needed to interpret the nuances of sustainability performance. EcoVadis continues to invest in this balanced approach, ensuring that their ratings remain reliable, nuanced, and aligned with evolving regulatory landscapes.
As EcoVadis grows, the focus remains on driving meaningful change. While companies are primarily concerned with regulatory compliance, Bettina underscores the importance of going beyond these requirements to create lasting positive impacts
